This is a tricky statement because there's a social aspect and a mathematical aspect. Socially you're correct in the sense that whatever trends are driving the current decline could, in theory, reverse at any time. But mathematically, population decline is exactly symmetrical to population growth: it's exponential (technically it's logistic, but that's the same as exponential in the short term), because having fewer people means fewer people to make more people later on.

I disagree with the implication here: we used to do more science because there was more low-hanging fruit, which is now plucked, and further discoveries require more resources (human and financial). Actually one of the big reasons I disagree with Ray Kurzweil and the other singularitarians is that when they show these impressive-looking exponential curves about scientific progress, they quietly hide under the rug that these increases are requiring ever-more investment (again, in both people and money) to accomplish. Just to pick a random example, every time chip manufacturers go to a new process (14nm -> 10nm -> 7nm -> 5nm -> 2nm etc.), the cost to build the fab basically doubles. I agree with this, but it's important to dig into that a little and understand the reasons. For example, I'm not yet convinced that there is a mass epidemic of people choosing childlessness because of anxiety about e.g. climate change. In internet comments sections you certainly see lots of people making that claim, but talk is cheap and randos on the internet can say whatever they want. In terms of the actual reasons, the data I've seen shows that number of children continues to track closely with a couple data points, mostly housing costs, expected lifetime income and uncertainly about future income flow.

The environmental stresses of more people is certainly a big issue, but I think it's one that can be dealt with without too much struggle with increased deployment of clean energy (one of the few optimistic data points lately is that there's a staggering amount of wind and solar power being deployed every year) and a couple of lifestyle changes like eating less meat. Not to say these are easy, but contrast with the pretty serious problems of population decline, particularly the social safety net.

Throughout the history of the world, the loss of a child has always been a traumatic experience. In the past, losing children in their first year of life was a disturbingly common occurrence in the lives of many parents. Contributions that are majorly responsible for this phenomenon of post-neonatal death are diseases/infections, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), malnutrition, low birth weight, home environment issues, and troubled pregnancy. To combat this, pioneers in obstetrics/gynecology and medicine researched and developed ways in which to solve these issues. Immunizations and vaccines were developed to fight infectious diseases, education and emphasis was placed around the need for proper prenatal care, and awareness was brought to a good amount of the known dangers surrounding pregnancy. Many issues that had once plagued parenthood and pregnancies were solved. One problem that was never solved, though, would be the disproportionately high mortality rate of black mothers and babies compared to their white counterparts. Unlike the aforementioned contributions listed above, this high mortality rate is caused by a pervasive structure of systematic and societal racism that is to be explored further in the remainder of this essay. The disproportionately high mortality rate of black mothers and babies is caused by a combination of disadvantages created by societal and systematic racism, the empathy gap, and lack of access to proper prenatal medical treatment.

  The United States of America is a country that was built on the agony, anguish, and affliction of African Americans. Since it’s beginning, black lives and bodies have always been seen as being worth less than everyone else’s in economic, humanitarian, and even educational ways. There is evidence of this in slavery, Jim Crow laws, police brutality, the school-to-prison pipeline, and much, much more. There is no doubt about it, racism in the United States is an unfortunately prevalent part of our society. In terms of racial discrimination in the medical industry, the proof remains plentiful and certified. The Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male was a secret experiment conducted by the U.S. Public Health Service to study the progression of syphilis without treatment. This experiment was advertised as a treatment for bad blood for colored people. Participants were promised free food, medical examinations, and burial insurance. Hundreds of poor black men signed up. The problem and unethicality within this research is that the men were not fully informed about the truth of the research. There were 600 men in total, 399 diagnosed with Syphilis and 201 did not have this deadly venereal disease. The participants who had been diagnosed with Syphilis were not given any treatment, but were instead essentially left to die so that their bodies could be examined for medical research post-mortem (Brown). This atrocity of a medical experiment is important to one’s understanding of the disproportionately high mortality rate of black mothers and babies because it proves that there exists and has existed, a racial bias in the pain assessment and medical treatment of black people. This bias is the foundation for creating serious health problems in black mothers and babies, specifically, because it is an error in the systematic structure of the lives of one particular group. Problems in systematic structures are especially dangerous because they can impact a group of already previously disadvantaged people on different levels from different angles. In the context of the topics being analyzed, it would be something in close relation to the dismissal of legitimate concerns and symptoms turning into a failure of empathy which perpetuates racial disparities, leading furthermore into wide scale issues similar to,”The United States’ African-American population [being] disproportionately poor. African Americans do not tend to hold employment positions that provide medical benefits” (Fauci 77). Seemingly “small” issues or biases in things that are of major importance to people’s health and livelihood creates room for large discrepancies that become dangerous as things advance and become more serious. These large discrepancies are part of the reason why black mothers are at a higher risk for pregnancies resulting in conditions (i.e. hypertension and pre-eclampsia) that cause higher rates of infant and maternal death. 

  In order to understand how these large discrepancies create and relate to lack of access, the topics of lack of access due to racial bias and their subsequent effects on the pregnancies specifically of black mothers, must be discussed. In the duration of a pregnancy, a woman’s body goes through countless transformations, whether they be physical, emotional, or in the form of something else that is a discomfort. Important necessities in order to help refrain from or stop these changes from disturbing one’s pregnancy include,” exercise and activity, maintaining a healthy weight, caring for your mental health, nutrition, and caring for your oral health” (Omama). This means that one has to have access to the time and resources required in order to maintain the necessities needed for a healthy pregnancy. Racial bias on all levels is partly responsible for perpetuating the higher mortality rate of black mothers and babies because it is what creates the lack of access gap that impacts minority mothers. It, being racial bias, is created when an obstacle is purposefully placed between a person and a thing that they need. In the past, these obstacles existed in the form of slavery or Jim Crow Laws. They were rules that were created in order to preserve the generational  downfall of black people. After the criminalization of segregation, oppressors had to become more creative with the ways in which they oppressed minority groups. This is where lack of access becomes more relevant. Despite the tremendous and widespread need for medical treatment,” many African Americans cannot effectively access medical care. This inaccessibility is due to a variety of factors, including a lack of health insurance, an inadequate number of healthcare facilities, “patient dumping,” difficulty in obtaining prescription drugs and an insufficient number of African-American doctors.” ( Fauci 71). Instead of being upfront with racism and racial bias, oppressors began to create lack of access to the resources minority groups needed to survive and exist comfortably. Once those resources were taken away, it had the same negative impact as slavery and Jim Crow laws, without actually having to be as boldly open and directly wrong. Oppressors succeeded in using lack of access as an updated form of segregation because it was subtle yet effective and able to be made to feel “normal”.  Racial bias being so deeply ingrained into the systematic design of this country to the point where it is seen as normal, is what creates widespread phenomenons such as black mothers and babies being negatively impacted in an unfortunate plethora of ways. The seemingly harmless and minute parts of racial bias all have the ability to exalt oppression. 

The creation and perpetuation of discrimination against the black race on systematic levels causes the trickle down effect that is responsible for certain phenomenons in the medical industry. Racial bias is what gives birth to negative discrepancies between races. When a person begins to look at one group of people as “the other”, they will begin to act differently towards “the other”, consciously or not. The widespread belief that somehow black people are stronger and able to withstand more struggle than others comes from “...an underlying belief that there is a single black experience of the world. Because this belief assumes blacks are already hardened by racism, people believe black people are less sensitive to pain. Because they are believed to be less sensitive to pain, black people are forced to endure more pain” (Silverstein). This may include showing favoritism to other races because of their racial background, using slurs to describe certain races, or even just seemingly harmless jokes. Racial bias is an attitude that can take place and be reflected in many different forms. Bias is not something that can be turned off or hidden. Bias will always find a way to make itself known, but unconscious bias is especially dangerous because it gives people the illusion of not having done anything wrong. It is similar to how a big portion of the general population believes that vaping is somehow a healthier and safer option compared to real cigarette smoking. In both situations, damage is still being done no matter what the appearance of the danger is because the root of the problem still exists in both situations. Unconscious bias is able to explain why things may appear to be equal even though there are still several unfair aspects to society. Implicit biases are so powerful because they have the power to impact almost every facet of life. This means unconscious bias can range from affecting the decision of a police officer choosing whether or not to pull someone over, a hiring manager deciding on who to hire for a new position, or a doctor choosing which method of care to give to a patient. All of these situations can end up being dire and life-altering situations depending on the circumstances, as is. Adding in a bias toward a certain kind of civilian, employee, or patient only ensures that an issue will arise more in that group. Racial bias is what creates the circumstances that allow for black mothers and babies to suffer medically on such a broad and undeniable scale. Implicit bias is what makes the conditions that much worse between black and white mothers. Relating back to the topic of black mothers and babies, implicit bias is a subdivision of the empathy gap. The empathy gap is a phenomenon in which people are not able to emphasize with or fully understand one’s situation because they are cognitively unaware of how to account for the decision making process and mental state of others. There are certain careers in this world that require more empathy than others. For example, doctors and nurses should be able to empathize with patients because of the considerable difference between each one and their case. Situations vary greatly and not everyone comes from the same background with the same knowledge of healthcare and how to get help. This is something that needs to be empathized with and understood because a misunderstanding of this fact is what can lead to a widening of the empathy gap. When a doctor looks at a patient and sees someone from a certain background dealing with a persistent medical condition, that is not the time to begin creating assumptions or premature judgment because when enough doctors begin to view enough of the same negative things in patients of similar backgrounds through a pessimistic lens, people begin to slip through the cracks. Doctors may unknowingly begin to dismiss what a patient feels or doubt how much pain they are truly in because they are desensitized to their humane existence due to the creation of racist or all around negative idealizations. The empathy gap creates a culture of dismissive attitudes and unfair treatment from doctors because they will not take certain cases as seriously if they do not empathize with the patient. This is why it is beyond important for doctors to equally assess, understand, listen to, and treat every patient the same way. Allowing for stereotypes and pessimistic views about a certain group of people only creates a space for those people to suffer. These stereotypes hold no real truth in society and cannot offer any real medical answer to assist a doctor in treating a patient. Empathy is a required skill when people’s lives are at risk. 

     Black mothers and babies have a disproportionately high mortality rate because of the way that society dehumanizes and downplays their existence. There are several reasons as to why and how the mortality rate became what it is, but the main reason is centered around the fact that there is a specific disadvantage placed so harshly onto black women, that it stunts their growth and progression away from phenomenons that should have already been understood and solved due to the updated society that exists in today’s world. These problems still exist because there are people that exist in today’s world, but live and acknowledge the world with the views of someone living seventy years ago. The age old stereotypes, jokes, idealizations, theories, and customs must come to an end in order for black women, mothers, and children to be able progress past the impact racial bias has already made on them. Discrimination on every level plays a part in as to why this mortality rate has been so popularly perpetuated.

The Biorhythm Compatibility Ratings Between Popular TV & Movie Couples & Their Actors! (Part 2).🌹

In case you are wondering what Biorhythm Compatibility is, it’s a scientific test or analysis that discovers the true compatibility and chemistry between two people, usually between a romantic couple. However, biorhythm compatibility can be used for friendships, family relationships, co workers/business partners, pets, and enemies. The biorhythm compatibility between two people is based on two people’s full date of birth (DD/MM/YYYY). There’s a percentage rating system that determines how compatible a couple is. There are three different categories within a Primary Biorhythm Love Match Compatibility test. These include Physical Compatibility, Emotional Compatibility, and Intellectual Compatibility. First, there is Physical Compatibility which focuses on sexual compatibility, physical compatibility, sexual desire, lust, and the level of passion that exists between a romantic couple. Second, there is Emotional Compatibility which focuses on emotions, feelings, moods, sensitivity, romantic feelings, compassion, empathy, and general intensity of an emotional connection between a romantic couple. The Emotional Compatibility category is arguably the most critical and important component in regards to romantic compatibility between two people in this test next to the Spiritual Compatibility rating (which is the primary purpose of this post and I will explain this later on). Finally, there is Intellectual Compatibility which focuses on mental and verbal communication between a romantic couple, intellectual and mental stimulation, analytical thinking, logical thinking, decision making, learning ability, and mental understanding between a romantic couple. My last rating post focused on the Physical, Emotional, Intellectual and Overall Compatibility Ratings. However, did you know that there is a Secondary Biorhythm Love Match Compatibility Test which focuses on another four separate categories? These four categories in the Secondary Biorhythm Love Match Compatibility Test include Spiritual Compatibility, Awareness Compatibility, Intuitive Compatibility, and Aesthetic Compatibility. Let me explain what each of these four categories in a Biorhythm Love Match Compatibility Test represents. First, there is Spiritual Compatibility – focuses on the spiritual connection and bond, the telepathic and emphatic connection between two people, and the degree of unconditional love, selflessness, harmony and peace between a romantic couple. Second, there is Awareness Compatibility –focuses on the learning ability between two people, cognition compatibility, and the ‘sixth sense’ between a couple. Third, there is Intuition Compatibility–focuses on the instincts and unconscious perception between a romantic couple. Finally, there is Aesthetic Compatibility–focuses on the appreciation for aesthetics and beauty, the understanding of creativity and the arts, and the creative compatibility between a romantic couple.  

The first thing, the most important thing is to know who you are, and how you connect to people. Are you the type of person that wants to have fun, a good time, go dancing, shopping, sit around and chat, the human contact type? Or are you the person that likes to go for hikes, go biking, diving, flying, sailing, skiing, the active kind? Or do you prefer to have intellectually stimulating conversations with intellectual or philosophical people, the intellectual kind? Of course, most of us are a combination of all of those things to varying degrees. Once you have determined who you are, and what you look for in a relationship, it is quite easy to find people that are compatible in this regard, be it physical, emotional, or intellectual. Also keep in mind that we need different things at different times. Problems in friendship appear when you try to take people from one crowd, and you try to bring them into another one where you are simply mismatched. That’s when the ‘you never want to have fun’ or the ‘we can never talk’ accusations happen. Yes, these people want to have fun, and they want to talk, but now when you want to, and you don’t want to when they want to. So, to sum it all up, don’t try to make your friends something they are not capable of, accept people for who and what they are, and concentrate on what your are compatible on. Rather, have several groups of friends and spend time with each group depending on your current needs and wants. Life will be much better this way. To further the concepts of the Biorhythms and Friendship concepts, we now move into a closer relationship of two individuals in terms of Love and Romance, and why some people get along and others don’t. Physical attraction is usually what opens the door, but what happens once you get into the room is dependent on compatibility. Physical attraction (i.e. looks) will work for the first date, but whether dating will continue depends entirely on how much these people have in common. Alternatively, if physical attraction is not part of the original intent, having spent some time with a person that is very compatible can nonetheless lead to a good long term relationship, and even Love and Romance. In order for Love and Romance to flourish in a relationship, the most important biorhythm to be compatible is the emotional cycle. To be in the same ‘mood’ is very important for any relationship to last. High compatibility in the physical biorhythmic cycle is no doubt a powerful ingredient, and you might have the time of your life for the first little while, but Lust alone cannot sustain a relationship. A physical cycle compatibility, which is in effect lust, only carries you so far. Eventually you need to talk. Eventually you need to feel. Eventually, you need to connect, so if there is nothing but physical compatibility, it will not last. There are people who have bounced from partner to partner to partner, focusing only on the physical compatibility component, and then wondering why they can never find somebody permanent, something that lasts for the long run. Love and Romance is not the physical biorhythm compatibility, and it is not the intellectual biorhythm compatibility, although both are very good and important to have to back up the romantic relationship. Love and Romance is the emotional cycle compatibility. Over time, an Biorhythm emotional mismatch will always manifest itself in the same way: “You never want to have fun.” But this is not the case. They just don’t want to have fun when you want to have fun, and they don’t want to be down and depressed when you what to be down and depressed. There is no perfect shoe and there is no perfect foot, there is only a perfect shoe for a certain foot. So if the slipper doesn’t fit, chances are this is not your Cinderella or Prince Charming. So, as an exercise to more successful dating and more love and romance, use Biorhythm Compatibility, and start scanning people for whether your biorhythms are compatible, and more importantly, which ones. Life is too short to keep dating the wrong type of person. Finally we move from Friendship and Love and Romance to Marriage, the quintessential long term relationship.   

What can be expected from the relationship of two people with different Biorhythm when they come together in a social or business relationship? The purpose of the Bio-Compatibility Analysis is to explore this situation. Forewarned can be forearmed. Is what you feel for that other person really love? We have been so distorted by our upbringing that we might not know who would be right for us. We are taught that we should love everyone. You attract opposites if you do not like yourself or if you have a need to suffer or if you were conditioned wrongly by being raised with people who are not like you. You can now find the love of your life. No need to settle for less. If you have been getting involved with people who make you unhappy, you can see what you are doing and correct it. You are on your way to greater happiness. Do not be afraid of it. You can learn to live with yourself; to accept yourself and others, too. Don’t fight it. You are what you are. There are people who will love you because you are you. At least 50% is needed IN EACH AREA of Bio-Compatibility (Physical-Mental-Emotional) for two people to be happy together without much friction. If you have an area of compatibility below 50-60%, it means there will definitely be friction in that area. The relationship will only work if both of you compromise equally. It may also work if one of you willingly becomes the giver and the other becomes the taker. Any action short of these two options will most likely result in a relationship termination. This termination will be a difficult decision for both of you, especially if you have a high Emotional (Love) percentage compatibility, but it will be for the long-term benefit of your individual personal growth. If your average compatibility is between 0% and 40%, it means you have low compatibility, but high polarity. Your high polarity will cause much stress but it will have the effect of balancing each other so that your risk factor becomes low as long as you are willing to give the other person much space to be who they are. Jealousy or fear easily arises in this type of compatibility and can be extremely detrimental to this relationship. High polarity is better for business relationships than it is for social relationships. A commitment to unconditional love for the other person is what is needed to insure the relationship. Accomplish this and you have the key to a fulfilling relationship. Every biorhythmic category has its own sphere of influence when it comes to harmony, disharmony, incompatibility and compatibility. The harmony or disharmony of certain biorhythms also affect relationships between people. The intellectual biorhythm can, under certain conditions, be called male or masculine biorhythms because its disharmony has a strongly negative influence on the stronger sex’s overall conduct and produces to constant discomfort, unsociability and a lack of self-esteem. All of these factors can be “successively” altered by alcohol or by cheating with another woman. This is one of the reasons for drunkenness and alcoholism among men. Disharmonious intellectual rhythms within a romantic relationship or romance can have a negative effect on the partners’ professional sphere and hinder their creative work and self-realization. On the other hand, harmonious intellectual biorhythms between individuals in a relationship gives us self-confidence and stability and they give rise to new ideas, professional self-improvement and self-development. Without the intellectual stimulation within a marriage or a relationship, a man will seek asylum in self destructive attitudes and behaviours including infidelity, gambling, partying, pornography, addictive hobbies, drug abuse, and alcoholism. The emotional biorhythms are considered to be more female or feminine biorhythms. So, their harmony influences the fairer sex more strongly but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a strong influence on men and how they act and behave within a marriage or relationship with women. Disharmonious emotional rhythms between a man and a woman in a romantic relationship and marriage mean loss of attractiveness, apathy about life, loss of empathy for others, imbalance, irritation and constant inner turmoil and distress, as well as dissatisfaction with life in general and tastelessness of food. Such moments are like “death” for men and especially women. Harmonious emotional biorhythms with a male partner are the main thing which women aspire to achieve. It is the mystery of their heart. There are a lot of things, without which she could be content, but she can’t live without harmonious emotional biorhythms (read “love”) with a mate. Any woman can find something positive in a criminal, whose emotional biorhythms are harmonious. A similar situation can be observed with harmonious intellectual rhythms, but it is more energy dependent than feelings and emotions. Finally, the physical biorhythms are responsible for health and sexual affairs. Disharmonious physical biorhythms between a man and a woman in a relationship and marriage mean, first of all, sexual dissatisfaction and lack of sexual interest with their mate. The marriage will be filled with much turmoil and destructiveness. Eventually, the relationship with deteriorate due to a lack of feeling and love between the partners. But here, a physical bent and sexual satisfaction keeps the family from being completely destroyed unlike the first example. But the marriage or relationship can’t be salvaged with the help of sex alone… a spiritual warmth, a feeling of love and emotion, and mutual understanding between the two involved in the marriage are also strongly necessary. Since this couple lacks the harmonious emotional and intellectual biorhythms, this is a marriage that will likely end up being seriously shallow, abusive, or end up in divorce. Though the man will be sexually satisfied by his female partner, he will still likely commit infidelity because he is not achieving satisfaction in the emotional or intellectual biorhythms. Only emotional biorhythms are harmonious or compatible: With this scenario, there is something like love, especially from the woman’s point of view. A great feeling of love appears from the very first acquaintance or from the first time a man and a woman meet each other. But over the course of time, the man’s feeling towards the woman can grow cold, distant, aloof and frigid towards the woman. Intimate relations don’t give any sense of joy or happiness. Their love becomes broken. It’s a real tragedy, especially for the woman in the relationship. She can’t reconcile herself with it. She is ready to do anything to bring her male lover back, and then live at his expense, doing nothing in return. As a result, the man may become a workaholic, using work and finances as an escape from the lack of intellectual or mental stimulation from his partner. Emotional and physical biorhythms are harmonious or compatible: The situation is quite complicated. It is better for men to avoid women in which they have such biorhythmic compatibilities. Besides a desire to possess you completely, there is a physical bent and sexual satisfaction, which is not achievable with anyone. The latter confuses men and makes woman’s behaviour more cruel in her struggle for her happiness. Only intellectual biorhythms are harmonious or compatible: It is the third type in reverse. A woman can be attracted by a man’s mental abilities or his skillfulness in speaking. But over a period of time, a person gets used to everything and finds nothing that brings warmth to their soul. A man begins to fight for his happiness. It means trouble for the woman, who gets married to such a man. Intellectual and physical biorhythms are harmonious or compatible: A physical satisfaction (contentment), which is associated with love, is added to the previous type. A man will make a lot of efforts to conquer such a woman. Intellectual and emotional biorhythms are harmonious or compatible: It is platonic love. Everything is good, except the sex factor. It is the type that is a real friendship and cooperation on all the levels. It is a good choice for a secretary, but not for a wife or romantic partner. Young people, whose feelings are developed more than their intimate relations, can fall into such a trap. For people who are satisfied with their position and have a good family, it is more like deep, strong companionship and cooperation. Maximalists, who are looking for complete harmony and compatibility, can destroy everything they should save with their own hands. Three harmonious biorhythms (more than 80%-100%) should unite people in marriage: True love, real feelings and the right kind of sex is possible with this dynamic. Such couples might say that others don’t understand what real love is: one shouldn’t speak about feelings, one should just love! These women end up giving birth to intelligent, beautiful and healthy children who live a happy life and are free of all kinds of problems (if they don’t make problems for themselves) including health, romantic, educational and financial. So, we have the characteristics of marriage from the biorhythmic point of view. Maybe someone thinks that life is more complicated than theories and formula. But our being can’t be more difficult than natural laws. We can’t always be united with the one we want, but we can avoid an unpleasant person. The main thing is to give our children all the very best, but our trust in God alone.

Yes, I’m a demographic pessimist. I see the above figures and see how the Western world is slowly becoming Brazil, half white, half black. But Brazil itself is not stable; white people are having less babies than black people there. Brazil is slowly becoming something like South Africa, 10% white, 90% black. But again, South Africa is not stable itself, is it? Birth rates are different, and if that didn’t suffice, blacks there are outright murdering white people and chasing them off the land. The actual endgame is actually worse than South Africa, which still has (people tell me) some very fine spots, such as Cape Town.

If there is a God, surely at least their sacrifices will win them the future of the species? History will talk about them as ancestors of the next stage of humanity. Right??

Wrong. I’m sorry guys, but evolution doesn’t work like that. Yes, sure, evolution is about differential reproduction. Whatever genes make you have more babies in a given environment, spread in the genepool. And whatever genes do the opposite, make it marginally harder for you to reproduce, disappear from the genepool. So yes, on the face of it, “genes that make you want children” are by definition being promoted by natural selection. The argument, as explained by promoters such as Anatoly Karlin, is that humans until now have been fruitful and multiplied perfectly well through a basic motivation: seeking sexual pleasure. But that motivation doesn’t work anymore in an environment with easy contraception, so the future belongs to people with psychological traits that make them enjoy family life.

Does it work like that, though? Are there any genes that “make you want children”? Does the brain work like that? The human brain is complicated, you see, but it is also an evolution of the more basic mammal brain, and its circuitry must follow roughly the same pathways. And last time I checked all mammals reproduce exactly the same way. The male produce quadrillions of sperm every minute, and are at the hunt of every ovulating female. The moment they find one they jump onto her, copulate semi-forcibly, and babies ensue. Yeah, this pretty much includes humans.

The idea that humans are going to single-handedly evolve, over single-digit generations, a completely different pattern of reproduction to replace one which has been functional for 60 million years strikes me as pretty wild wishful thinking.

Supposedly though, at some point of impoverishment, the downward drift of average IQ would stop, as intelligence would begin to pay again. Without welfare and Bioleninist political machines with an incentive to bring ever stupider people into a country in order to lower the cost of clientelism, at some point the drift into Global Haiti ceases to function, and you get some sort of stable equilibrium of, say, 90-95 IQ people. Cinna/Finnick AU

Well, I have one million fics in flight that will never be finished, and this is almost certainly one of them, so I figure I may as well give you a summary, since the entertainment value of that has to be somewhere above “an indefinitely long string of posts about writing fic that don’t actually result in fic for you to read.”

So this is Cinna/Finnick roommates fic, but this is in fact not the Cinna/Finnick roommates modern AU fic I just posted about. This is actually a serious business, canon-divergent fic!

Content warning: character death, dubcon drug use, addiction, codependence, PTSD, didn’t spell it out but I think we all know why Finnick can’t take it any more...

The story opens with Cinna testifying before a coroner’s court that he killed Finnick. They were having sex, Finnick was high, Finnick kept asking for another hit, Cinna knew he should tell him he’d had enough but could never say no to Finnick, Finnick’s heart stopped. Now the Capitol’s investigating: murder, suicide, or accidental drug overdose?

Cinna puts on a convincing portrayal of grief and Finnick’s complete mental incapacitation under the influence and general lack of good judgment, and the verdict comes back accidental overdose. Now, in theory, both Cinna and all of Finnick’s district, loved ones, and other D4s victors, are free from the consequences of depriving the Capitol of their favorite plaything. Shit happens, be more careful with your drugs, let this be a lesson to everyone.

But in practice, the government is capricious, and the socialites are very unhappy. Plutarch Heavensbee appears at Cinna’s door in the middle of the night, offering him an escape to an outlying district to lie low while he waits for things to blow over and another pretty young victor to come along. (Gag.)

Cinna, who feels guilty about his life of Capitol privilege, takes Heavensbee up on the offer, and Cinna goes to District Twelve to make ends meet as a tailor.

The train breaks down before it reaches the station, and Cinna’s escort says they’ll have to walk the rest of the way and inform someone. As he’s stepping off the train, Cinna feels something sharp, like a bee, jab him in the back of the neck.

He wakes up in a hospital bed, and he’s either hallucinating, or that’s really Finnick Odair standing over his bed, frantically demanding, “What was the verdict?!”

Turns out! Nineteen-year-old Finnick decided he couldn’t take it in the Capitol any more. He got in touch with District Thirteen via their moles in the Capitol and drove a bargain: critical military and political intelligence in return for assisted escape to District Thirteen, for him and the only guy in the Capitol he trusted to help him, and whose life he put at risk by including him in the plan: Cinna.

So D13 got together some drugs that mimicked death, Finnick spent the better part of a year laying the groundwork by developing a real addiction, and he made sure he was with Cinna when the apparently fatal dose was administered. He trusted Cinna to pull off an accidental overdose verdict if anyone could.

Then the doctor who officially declared him dead was friendly to the cause, and Finnick had framed someone else in advance to take the fall when his body disappeared.

Now Finnick and Cinna are in District Thirteen for life. They’ll never (as far as they know) see any of their loved ones again, but Finnick’s are safer now that they can’t be used as leverage for his good behavior in the Capitol. Finnick is apologetic that he couldn’t either tell Cinna about the plan or get permission to include him in the escape plan, but there was no safe way to do so.

And Finnick knew Plutarch wasn’t lying: even that verdict wasn’t totally safe for Cinna.

Cinna, who has been developing feelings for Finnick in the little time they’ve been able to spend together, and is, as we’ve seen, absolutely riddled with guilt at profiting off the blood and sweat of the districts, not to mention horrified at what Finnick’s been put through, readily forgives him and agrees Finnick did the right thing.

Now they’re living in District Thirteen.

A badly traumatized and missing his family (mostly Mags) Finnick desperately wants to share a room with Cinna, the only person he knows and trusts. District Thirteen has rules, and you’re only allowed to pick your roommate if you’re married. But due to the population crash after the recent epidemic, non-fertile marriage licenses have been revoked. Maybe that’ll change in a decade or two, if the birth rate picks up.

Enter Doctor Aurelius, who I have made a kind and competent therapist. Out of concern for Finnick’s mental health, he talks Coin into a compromise, where she exempts refugees from the new fertile marriage law, on the grounds that refugees have already contributed to the population.

Aurelius also gives Cinna some serious counseling, along the lines of, “I know all your interactions with Finnick so far have been sunshine and roses, but there haven’t been that many, and you better know what you’re getting yourself into here, because a relationship with a deeply traumatized teenager is not the world’s easiest job.” And he strongly encourages Cinna to enter into proactive counseling if he goes through with the marriage.

They get married. Implication that it will be rocky but they’ll get their happy ending because they have support. The end.

Draft 3

Finnick's been going through the standard D13 program for tapering off drugs. He's doing well and looking forward to contributing to the resistance.

Buuuut. Coin is evil. She likes neutralizing rivals and threats. And a boy who won the Games at fourteen and by nineteen demonstrated he could negotiate special treatment from one government in order to bring down another government using information he gathered while spying on them is a definite potential threat.

So after milking him for the information he has, Coin goes on about how amazing Finnick's accomplishments are and how he's the only person whoever acquired a drug addiction on purpose to help District Thirteen out, and if he's still having cravings, they can repay him for his sacrifices by giving him a slower taper. Which, as you can probably guess, ends up being a taper up, so that Finnick is not figuring out that his new president is almost as despotic as the last one and deciding he needs to sleep with her underlings to gather information.

Finnick, instead, is perfectly happy with all the accommodations this helpful and supportive government is making for him, from being allowed to room with someone he's not married to, to a concerned nurse who's happy to prescribe anything he likes, to his wonderfully ever-present boyfriend/roommate, who lacks an official schedule tattooed onto his arm, and is thus free to keep an eye on Finnick while he's high as a kite, which is most of the time these days.

Because Cinna continues to be both guilt-ridden, confused about what's in Finnick's best interests, and manipulated by his therapist (who the reader figures out is the same happy-to-prescribe nurse who's working for Coin) into thinking that his instinct never to deny Finnick anything is much healthier than his better judgment that maaaybe Finnick spending all day in his room and never interacting with anyone except Cinna and the hospital staff is a bad thing? And Cinna is encouraged to be proud that his continued attentiveness is so good for Finnick's mental health. In a word, Cinna ends up in a totally codependent mindset, where the more Finnick depends on him, the better Cinna feels.

This is that predicament I was talking about. Because in my observation, people who don't want help, and live with their enablers, don't get help. Times one million, I imagine, if the government is invested in keeping them that way.

Because Snow never fully knew what Finnick was capable of, but he came to Coin with his hand played.

Lorata, this is pretty much the same reason you haven't been able to finish Rick & Lacy.

Part of the problem is that in order to make Cinna the love of Finnick's life, I set this before Annie, i.e. before the 70th Hunger Games. So it's a little over five years before any other victors come to D13. By making Finnick not the D4 tribute in 75, I can probably have Mags survive, possibly at Peeta's expense (I would really like to talk to someone who understands Katniss to figure out how she would react), but that's a really long time, and also almost certainly results in Finnick missing all the action. Because it's not like Mags shows up, Finnick's back to his old self in time to participate in the war. Which is good because he lives, but bad because that's a hell of a time skip and I'm not sure it's worth the payoff. It feels pretty anticlimactic, actually.

Plus there's the problem that in my head, whenever Mags does show up and start trying to convince Finnick that Coin did this to him, he's had five-plus years to rationalize to himself that it was his idea, that he's been through enough, that he's finally happy, and that after all he went through to protect her, she has no right to demand that he sacrifice himself yet again to this war. And there's a pretty interesting philosophical argument where she insists "he" doesn't want this, it's just the drugs that altered his brain chemistry, maybe irreversibly, and he asks, "If I'm perfectly sober and just enjoy this lifestyle, what on earth does it mean for there to be a 'me' that doesn't want this?"

So idk what to do. If there’s to be a literarily satisfactory solution, I feel like it has to come pretty early on.

Maybe, because Doctor Aurelius is in the picture, and Finnick's been having daily therapy with him during the first weeks after his arrival, I can have Finnick say something to him that causes him to get suspicious and say something that causes Finnick to realize what's going on...but, damn, this is complicated, y'all.

Spotting cardiovascular issues can be tricky with children. Experts explain what to look for and ways to protect their heart health long-term.

When it comes to raising kids, there’s a lot to keep track of: dentist appointments, recitals, wellness visits, soccer practice ― the list goes on and is never organized in your brain of what’s most important first.

And then there are the things that are on the list whether you’re aware of them or not ― like your child’s heart health. You know that you want, and maybe even assume, that your child’s heart is tiptop shape, but how do you know if it’s not?

Thankfully, you don’t have to do this alone, explained Dr. Sharon E. O’Brien, director of paediatric cardiology at Boston University School of Medicine. “One of the reasons pregnant women have a foetal screen ultrasound is to detect congenital heart disease,” she said. Depending on the type of ultrasound and sensitivity of the test, these screenings can detect anywhere from 65% to 95% of congenital heart disease.

But not all heart disease starts in utero. O’Brien said these are known as acquired heart issues, and don’t develop until early childhood or beyond. Here are some of the red flags that your child may be dealing with heart issues. Plus, some advice on what you can do to help keep your kid’s heart healthy, so they don’t have a problem down the road during adulthood.

Excessive sweating and poor weight gain If you find your child sweating profusely regardless of the weather, that could be a warning sign for a heart issue. It’s especially important to pay attention to new-borns doing this, said Dr. Achiau Ludormirsky, a paediatric cardiologist at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone.

“If there is excessive sweating, where you have to change their clothes every two to three hours, that’s something to be concerned about,” he said.

Ludormirsky added that slow weight gain because of poor feeding may also signal a problem, particularly if they fall asleep on the breast or bottle shortly after they start eating, preventing them from getting the calories they need.

“You may also notice the baby huffing and puffing for a long time after eating, which is clinically referred to as tachypnoea ― a high respiratory rate,” he said.

All these symptoms, along with a rapid heart rate (known as tachycardia) may mean your child has intracardiac shunting ― abnormal pathways for blood flow that put the heart in volume and pressure overload.

“While your new-born will be monitored after birth, if you get home and notice they have blue lips or extremities, this can be cyanotic heart disease which results in low blood oxygen level and should be mentioned to a paediatrician,” Ludormirsky added.

Chest pain (and other funny feelings) The same complaint that fires off warning bells for adults when it comes to their heart can also be worrisome when children start to complain about it, too. Just keep in mind, however, that kids may express this pain differently than adults.

“For younger kids, it can be hard to distinguish what’s going on,” O’Brien said. “It’s normal for heart rates to change based on what we’re doing, such as sleeping versus running, but sometimes heartbeats can be abnormally fast when they don’t need to be.”

Be mindful of chest “pain” that could be actual pain or palpitations, along with other symptoms like exercise intolerance, not being able to keep up with their friends, and being tired all the time (i.e., a child that always must be carried through the grocery store when peers their age walk without difficulty).

“If your child has experienced fainting, that’s a big red flag that needs immediate evaluation,” O’Brien said.

In addition to chest pain, notice if any corresponding symptoms come up in young kids, such as fever or rash. “This could be Kawasaki disease, which can cause inflammation in the coronary arteries and requires treatment,” O’Brien said.

Family history Sometimes the sign that heart issues may be a problem for your child can be found on paper through their family history.

“In some cases, there is a family gene of hypercholesterolemia,” Ludormirsky said. “This is high cholesterol of 600 or more. In these cases, it’s always best to get the child set up with a cardiologist to help prevent early coronary heart disease.”

If you’ve had a family member have a heart attack at an early age, require a pacemaker, or any other cardiac issues, O’Brien said it’s best to mention that to your paediatrician so they are aware and can assess accordingly.

How to prevent heart disease in kids When specialists discuss and evaluate heart disease in kids, there are two main buckets: congenital issues and acquired. But there is a third group ― preventative, said Dr. Carissa Baker-Smith, director of the paediatric preventive cardiology program at Nemours Children’s Health in Wilmington, Delaware, and an American Heart Association volunteer expert.

“When we talk about heart disease and adulthood ― things like high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke ― we often assume they only happen as adults. Yet these conditions can begin in early childhood if we’re not taking the proper preventative measures,” she said.

Here are a few ways Baker-Smith said you can protect your child’s heart health and spot warning signs early on:

Recognize when a child’s weight for their height is not normal. Stay on top of your child’s wellness visits, as your paediatrician will log their growth chart. A body mass index greater than 85% is considered overweight and 95% is clinically classified as obesity. Joyful movement is important. Even when the weather gods are against you ― get your kids moving around the house. Anything goes ― a game of Twister, helping you clean, making silly TikTok videos, whatever has them off the couch and moving. Meal balance is key. Try to get as many fruits and vegetables into their diet as possible. When fresh isn’t an option, frozen is a healthy substitute. (Skip canned fruits and veggies though, as they contain a lot of salt and sugar.) Practice portion control. An easy way to do this is to serve kids meals on a salad plate. They don’t need to be (and shouldn’t be) eating the same amount of food adults are yet.

In your first period, you sat trapped in your thoughts.  No one had ever done what that boy had done to you.  Anger raged inside of you making you want to rip his head off, but, at the same time, lust pooled within your body making you want to rip off every fabric of clothing he was wearing.  You let out a frustrated grunt and shook your head.  You didn’t even know his name, yet he was the only thing on your mind for the first half of your day.  When the bell releasing you for lunch rang, you made your way to your normal table.  Your two friends, Karen and Melissa, sat waiting for you.  Although both girls greeted you, your mind was elsewhere. You searched through the crowds of people until you finally found who you were looking for.  Your eyes narrowed as you got up making a beeline for him. New Horizons In Cardiac Surgery Explained By Best Cardiac Surgeon In World

In the last few years, implantable mechanical support devices have joined the list of long term options for heart failure. In contrast, the current implantable left ventricular assist devices augment the function of the native heart and can be powered by portable battery packs. Their success in supporting patients awaiting transplantation over months (“bridge to transplant”), allied to the growing imbalance between demand for the supply of hearts for transplantation, has encouraged their permanent implantation. Two electrically driven left ventricular assist devices (the Novacor and the heartmate) are now available for long term implantation. Their major limitations are the risks of infection, thromboembolism, noise, and batteries that need to be charged every eight to twelve hours.

Two newer concepts show promise in the surgical treatment of heart failure. The jarvik 2000 is an axial flow pump, about the size of a thumb( in contrast to the one litre volume displacement of the heartmate), designed to sit within the apex of the left ventricular and silently deliver non-pulsatile flow rates upto 10 litres per minutes. Secondly, evidence is accumulating that prolonged support with left ventricular assist devices may allow at least some recovery of native cardiac functions. The raises the fascinating possibility that mechanical intervention at an earlier stage in the course of certain types of heart failure, including viral myocarditis and dilated cardiomyopathy, might restore normal cardiac function (“bridge to recovery”)

Many question remain unanswered. Left ventricular assist devices are inherently expensive, but randomized trials comparing them with medical treatment or transplantation may prove them cost effective. Should they be used at an earlier stage of heart failure in the hope of promoting native cardiac recovery? Would a silent, miniaturized, fully implantable device prove preferable to conventional transplantation or xenotransplantation with immunosuppressant and other inherent problems? Is it possible that these different surgical approaches to heart failure might become complimentary treatments at different stages of the disease, allowing the surgical procedure to be tailored to individual patients? The current lack of donor organs for transplantation adds urgency to the debate.

Fetal Cardiac Surgery

The aim of fetal intervention should be to provide foetuses with heart defects, who had hitherto been “condemned-to-die”, a meaningful chance of survival. Preserving heart muscle function, preventing progression of already existing changes(like a condition called Fibroelastosis), and restoring a near-normal pattern of growth to the heart chambers and blood vessels are the targets of fetal surgery. If this is achieved, then any future operations after the child is born could be fully reconstructive, done at a single stage and with reasonable chances of restoring a normal heart, and a normal life span to the survivor.

Contrast this with the present situation where corrective operations for complex heart defects need to be done in multiple stages, each with its own risks and complications, and ultimately resulting in a life expectancy and a lifestyle considerably different from normal persons. That such ideals can be achieved is suggested by the encouraging results of animal experiments. To perform surgery on intracardiac structures or great vessels, it is necessary to put the fetus on extracorporeal circulation(i.e., Cardiac bypass). Since the fetus is already on physiologic ‘bypass via the placenta, extracorporeal cardiac bypass in the fetus is much more complex that cardiopulmonary bypass can be safely performed in foetuses as small as 450 grams with transfusion.

The current status of fetal cardiac surgery is similar to the field of infant heart surgery 60 years ago, when it was clear that correction of certain congenital defects would provide great benefit, but there was no safe and effective method to gain access to the heart. However, with the development cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) equipment and techniques, intraoperatives access to the heart became possible. This allowed postnatal cardiac surgery to be done safely and effectively. If similar “low risk”techniques, understanding and equipment existed for the fetus, there would be little argument that fetal cardiac surgery would be preferable e for certain congenital lesions. I predict that when fetal cardiac surgical techniques become equally advanced and safe, (which won’t be long), innovative cardiac surgeons will surely expand the indications for the procedure to cover the entire spectrum of congenital heart disease. And that would be the end of birth defects of the heart, as we know them today. This sure is a great time to be a cardiac surgeon!

Genetic Engineering

Concept of genetic engineering was a introduced by Herbert boyer and stenley cohen in the year 1971. In 1969, they performed studies on a couple of properties of enzymes known as aldectase. Boyer observed that these enzymes have the capability of cutting DNA strands in a particular fashion, which left what has become known as ‘sticky ends’ on the strands. These clipped ends are made by pasting together pieces of DNA which is a precise exercise. This breakthrough was the basis upon which the discipline of Generic engineering was founded. Modern molecular genetics has revolutionized medicine and our knowledge of ourselves. In simple terms, genetic engineering (GE) is the ability to manipulate the genes of an organism to produce a given protein or obtain organisms that have a given trait.

The first big success of GE was the production of insulin by genetically modified bacteria. It showed the medical, economical and industrial possibilities of this technology. Like a pyramid buried in the sands of desert, the possibilities and usage of GE were being uncovered. Thanks to refined techniques in molecular genetics and recombinant DNA techniques, its usage soon started to be employed in vast array of areas.

The greatest applications of genetics are in medicine. By knowing which gene, which piece of the genetic code is responsible for a given disease, physicians can diagnose the disease. It also provides scientists the opportunity to understand how disease occur and eventually develop treatments. A large part of modern biomedical research is conducted based on genetics and GE. The possibilities for applying GE to change the human genome are immense: there are genes that offer protection against disease such as cancer and AIDS, genes that code enhanced senses and intelligence, anything we can imagine. For instance, it may be possible in near future to go the doctor and have a gene inserted that gives rise to a stronger immune system. Another technology is gene therapy, which usually works by injecting special viruses into patients that then deliver the gene of interest into the patient’s cells.

There are thousands of genetic diseases that are encoded by the nuclear genome, such as the Down’s syndrome. A complicated option to take care is pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). In this technique, used to create what is often called a “designer baby”‘ an embryo is created by in-vitro-fertilization(IVF) and tested for genetic diseases and genomic imbalances that can cause problems to the child. This technique allows for the selection of healthy babies, but also to create a baby to treat a sick sibling. The next step in “designer babies” is to use GE to correct genetic diseases in the embryo. Importantly, germinal GE would allow for the evolution of the human species.

The 47th Chromosome, also called techno chromosome, is a therotical concept that proposes adding a new chromosome, or more likely a pair of chromosomes, to our current set of 46 chrosomes. This would allow us to include all the changes we desire without the danger of creating genetic imbalances by changing our current chromosomes. Molecular system engineering has created an artificial chromosome that can be passed into the progeny of mice, and there are attempts to expand this research into humans as cell mendiated gene therapy and stem cell therapy, so this is not science fiction. Forecasting the future isn’t easy. Some Japanese Culture for Writing References (Part 2: Valentine’s Day & White Day)

After experiencing two years of Valentine’s Day in Japan, here’s some general information on what I picked up. Also includes information on White Day as those two ‘holidays’ are packaged together. Find all the relevant info under the read more. 

(Warning: The reader might be offended or find Valentine’s Day culture in Japan appalling, but this is the reality over here. It’s less a day celebrated for love and more about practicality.)

Valentine’s Day~

Females customarily give chocolates to males on Valentine’s Day. There are two types of chocolates that are marketed for women to buy: giri-choco and honmei-choco. The former is an obligation, usually given by the working woman to her male colleagues in the workplace. The latter is ‘real’ chocolate in the sense that it’s better quality because it’s given to the man that she is romantically interested in or has an intimate relationship with such as a childhood friend or a close colleague (though the latter is a case-by-case basis).

Not every woman gives chocolates to men on Valentine’s Day even if she’s working with male coworkers. The reasoning behind giving chocolates at all is for the woman to show her appreciation to her male coworkers who have supported her or looked out for her when she needed help. 

It’s for this reason that many men expect chocolates from women on Valentine’s Day. If they don’t receive any, they might feel left out, or they’ll take it as a sign that none of their female colleagues appreciated them, so getting chocolates is a kind of way to save face in certain cases. (That’s because it’s likely the other male coworkers will ask about how many chocolates they received.)

Some men also testify that by receiving chocolates, there is an improvement in the working relationship between their female colleagues. Again, that has to do with the men seemingly feeling appreciated. Some women who also subscribe to this belief will give chocolates as a result. 

Whether this practice is helpful to improve the atmosphere between coworkers in the workplace is situation dependent, however. Valentine’s Day products are mostly marketed towards female office workers who don’t have the time to make their own chocolates, so they just buy a large pack of individually wrapped ones to distribute among the workplace, which can feel very impersonal and just done out of necessity rather than showing real appreciation. I get the feeling that most women typically buy chocolates for the men who have directly supported them or helped them out and give it to them privately, so they can thank them in person for taking care of them. This also helps to keep any other man from feeling bad about not getting some chocolates if they didn’t see her give them away to someone else. Not to mention, it’s really helpful for the woman because the larger her workplace is, the more expensive Valentine’s Day can get for her if she buys chocolate for every man.

Honmei-choco can also be bought, but they are much more expensive because they are higher quality. Since Japan is an intensive working country and no one really has the time to cook (unless you’re a housewife or the rare househusband), fewer women are making their own handmade chocolate to give to their romantic interests except maybe the younger females who care more about romantic love and want to put in the extra effort to appeal to their love interest. 

It’s also not unheard of for women to make their own handmade giri-choco especially if it’s simple treats, but this is probably a rare practice only seen among school girls. In a school setting, it’s more likely for girls to offer handmade chocolate (although most of them are going to work carefully on honmei-choco and are less worried about preparing giri-choco so that their love interest won’t get the wrong idea). 

It’s pretty rare for chocolates to be given away in elementary schools. If it happens at all, it would probably be among the sixth-graders, especially in the case of someone’s love interest planning on going to a different junior high school than they are, for example. Some junior high schools will outright ban any talk of Valentine’s Day, i.e. they’ll discourage confessions or handing out chocolates just because education in junior high schools are much stricter, and students are more disciplined. (For example, snacks are not allowed to be eaten at school. Even the staff have to be careful about not letting the students see them eating them.) That doesn’t mean junior high school students won’t attempt to confess or offer chocolates privately, off of school grounds or maybe sneak by during club activities when the club advisor isn’t watching. ;)

High schools and universities will have the most activity when it comes to Valentine’s Day. High schools are not obligatory part of the education system in Japan, so there’s more free reign in what students can do. And even though college students are busy, they are also thinking about their next step in life including who they’ll be marrying, so handmade honmei-choco are going to be the most common here.

*Can girls give choco to girls or boys to boys? The short answer is yes depending on the situation, but it’s not the traditional practice by any means. The ‘holiday’ is targeted towards women to give chocolates to men for the following ideals 1) help improve relationships between men and women in the workplace; 2) help women appeal to their love interest so that she can one day get married and have children (because gosh one of the biggest problems in Japan is the declining birth rate, seriously). So for these reasons, the kind of chocolate sales that are marked for Valentine’s Day is made with the intent that males will be receiving them and females will be giving them, so there’s a certain class of chocolates that are made with that in mind. For example, there’s a lot of different chocolates with low levels of alcohol made in them. 

With that said, I’m sure that won’t stop any LGBTQ females or males from giving chocolates to whoever they want. It’s just not something that you see out in the open, at least not at this time in Japan. However, there are certain exceptions such as some female coworkers who will give chocolates to everyone (male or female) as a symbol of thanks. In that case, it’s not abnormal for one of the female coworkers to return the favor by giving chocolates back to their female coworker on the same day, or even the next day, or in some cases, on White Day. (I’ve had all three happen to me.) What I haven’t seen happen is a male coworker giving another male coworker chocolates on Valentine’s Day. Nor have I seen a male coworker give chocolates to a female coworker on Valentine’s Day because they’re not expected to do that until White Day.

White Day~

If Valentine’s Day is for women to show appreciation to men by giving them chocolate, then White Day is marketed for men to return the favor to women. This means you shouldn’t expect any unsold chocolates the day after Valentine’s Day to be discounted because they’re going to be recycled for White Day sales too! (I literally saw my local grocery store change the Valentine’s Day sign to a White Day sign.) 

White Day is a month after Valentine’s Day - March 14. On this day, women wait with bated breath to see if all their effort paid off (if they put it the extra effort for honmei-choco anyway) and see what kind of gifts they receive on White Day.

Receiving chocolate is the standard on White Day (especially white chocolate or white-colored sweets), but various gifts are thrown into the mix as well depending on the man’s relationship to the woman. White-colored accessories such as white-colored jewelry (pearls, white gold, etc.), bags, watches, etc. are often purchased for the husband’s wife or the very generous boyfriend’s girlfriend. Male coworkers, however, usually just stick to white choco as their returned obligation gift, unless they are romantically interested and are trying to appeal with a little something extra.

Although this day is for males to buy choco, as aforementioned, it’s not uncommon for females to offer return chocolate to their female colleagues if they received unexpected chocolates from them on Valentine’s Day. Still, I’ve never seen any male coworker give another male coworker chocolates on White Day. That isn’t to say this absolutely wouldn’t happen, but because LGBTQ aren’t exactly widely accepted in Japan, these kind of exchanges would probably be done in private, if at all. It’s a lot safer for females to give each other chocolates on either days without anyone raising a brow especially if other coworkers witnessed the reason for it (i.e. the first female coworker giving chocolates to everyone so the second female coworker returns chocolates to them out of politeness). 

*What doesn’t happen on Valentine’s Day? Other than no obvious exchange of chocolates between males, you most likely won’t see some of the more western traditions of Valentine’s Day such as Valentine’s cards or flowers. The former isn’t a norm nor do I think it exists at all (except maybe an English class as a cultural exchange lesson), but there’s probably some kind of formal, Hallmark card equivalent that very few people might give to each other on that day. It’s likely to be done by westerners rather than native Japanese people, however. They definitely lose out on the pun-filled Valentine’s cards that are very popular in western countries though. It’s a shame. As for flowers, again, I never see people buy them, and that’s probably because even in western countries, it’s more common practice for males to buy flowers for females. Since Valentine’s Day makes the females the giver, it’s not very likely that males will appreciate flowers as a gift. At least not compared to alcohol-laced chocolates.

As a side note, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that other western symbols of Valentine’s Day like Cupid go unnoticed here. Some groceries stores might have a picture of Cupid by the Valentine’s Day sales but only because it looks cute. It’s not very likely that the average person in Japan can identify who Cupid is and why he’s a symbol for Valentine’s Day.
